The
Tyde
Three's Co.
The third album from this L.A surf band is a lazy,
summery affair (as you might expect). You can imagine it playing
during a crazy barbecue montage in The O.C.
It would sit quite happily next to Teenage Fanclub or The Thrills
in your record collection (Conor Deasy (The Thrills) even provides
backing vocals on one of the tracks). Music of this ilk tends
to walk a very fine line between disarmingly quirky, and irritatingly
twee. I actually found myself singing the theme-tune to Scooby
Doo over the verse of ‘County Line’.
Occasionally, the band try to sound a bit shambolic and wilfully
aimless by throwing in some squelchy synths, or J.Mascis-style
guitar. But mostly it just sounds aimless.
Opener ‘Do It Again Again’ boasts a memorable pop
hook, and tracks like ‘The Pilot’ and ‘Glassbottom
Lights’ have a shred of attitude.
If you’re still paying attention by the end, ‘Don’t
Nead A Leash’ is an idyllic, blissed-out treat to fall asleep
in the sun to. It’s hard to imagine anyone being a hardcore
devotee of amiable guitar-pop such as this. But if you want to
create your own crazy barbecue montage in your back garden, this
is the perfect soundtrack.
