Mark
Ronson
Stop Me
*****
The
first single to be lifted from the much anticipated Version
album from the producer and beat smith Mr Mark Ronson. Since
his cover of Radiohead's ‘Just’ on last years Exit
Music EP, I’ve been waiting with expectant ears to
hear where he was going to go next.
Heavily in demand as a producer & re-mixer he has never
the less taken time to craft this dance-floor monster. For the
LP and indeed this single he has assembled one of the tightest
funk bands to be seen in the UK for some time. Taking a classic
Smiths’ song like this and reinterpreting it was always
going to be interesting but is it any good?
Well, yes, and he does it with style. The song has a real 70’s
soul sound; Stax horn breaks, Philly soul strings but its driving
bass and live break beat percussion bring it bang up to date.
Ronson’s Australian protege Daniel Merriweather’s
soaring vocals draws it all together into one big beautiful
hunk of funk.
From recent interviews, and the music itself, there is an obvious
love for the original recordings he has chosen and you get a
real sense that everyone involved in this is really enjoying
the performance. This genre-crossing track is bound to be on
almost any dance-floor you may cross this weekend, and the album
itself, with contributions from the likes of Wu-Tang’s
ODB, Lily Allen and more, promises to be a must-have for all
your summer parties.
In summary; it’s great! You will not be disappointed...
