Fink
Biscuits for Breakfast
Ladies and gentlemen let me introduce
you to a true musical chameleon.
Former Ninja Tune purveyor of all things beat-laden has been resurrected
as the labels first guitar-totting singer-songwriter. For those
familiar with the labels out-put this sounds like an intriguing
prospect, but nothing could prepare them for the pure brilliance
of Fink’s new record.
After the critical plaudits showered on the album’s first
two singles ‘Pretty Little Thing’ and ‘So Long’,
Fink is getting the critics hot under the collar with full-length
perfection.
Lyrically this is concerned with Fink’s own personal preoccupations,
as he handles familiar subjects with an attention to detail which
shows his calibre as a song-writer.
Musically it’s perfectly executed taking the classic sounds
of acoustic story-tellers, making recognisible sounds but making
them fresh for 2006.
His guitar journeys are fused with soul, folk, blues and dub whilst
taking in the trip-hop beats and ambience he so successfully peddled
in his previous musical incarnation.
Sexy, confident and classy Biscuits for Breakfast stands
up to other down-tempo classics like Blue Lines and Dummy
with Fink underpinning acoustic music with a real smooth groove.
As albums go this is near perfect and deserves to be an integral
part of peoples lives very soon.
