As much as I'd like to, I really can't take this song seriously. Not because of the music itself (which is actually quite enjoyable, especially so on the drum-heavy FBI remix, the second track of the single), not because of Mr Banner's deep breathy vocals; not even because of the scantily clad, over-excited ‘exercise girls’ featured in the accompanying video.

The reason I can’t listen to this song without laughing out loud is the lyrics.

Featuring such emotive lines as “Lickey, lickey, lickey, like a peppermint swirl” and “Play with your monkey, damn, cause your ass so chunky”, Play is less a musical extravaganza and more an expression of Banner’s out-of-control libido.

Banner, who has previously worked with hip-hop maestros such as Dead Prez, Lil’Jon and 8 Ball, is using the release of Play to launch himself into the UK market after a relatively successful run in the US.

Let’s just hope that the Great British public can take the lustful Mr Banner more seriously than I can.
