Daedelus
Fair Weather Friends
****
I
always know I’m in for something interesting when unwrapping
a new release from Ninja Tune, still putting out some of the freshest
dance music from around the world after god knows how long. This
little gem of an EP does not disappoint, featuring five varied
tracks from this LA beat-smith it brightened up my day no end.
The opening title track has a real early jungle feel, the beats
and sweeping synth have an air of some of Goldie’s finest
work about them with a great vocal sample woven throughout.
There isn’t too much departure from a formula that obviously
works for this guy; track 2, “My Beau” has a more
R ‘n’ B flavour, again teaming Daedelus’s
beats with a funky female up front. Track 3, “Hermitage”
is possibly my favourite, a straight up dance tune, with rolling
breaks and a pounding beat, track 4 is more of the same, with
the final entry onto this EP, “Bonjour” being a
more restrained ambient affair with a funky beat, looping samples
and synths and just a little bit of dancefloor thrown in.
All
in all another great release from Ninja Tune, while you can
feel the inspiration of acts like the Orb, Kraftwerk, and the
Chemical Bros. moving through Daedelus’s music it’s
never derivative, always upfront and fresh.
Highly recommended.
