Blood On The Line EP
If you think
you haven’t heard Amanda Ghost’s music, you’d
be mistaken (sort of). She co-wrote ‘You’re Beautiful’
with James Blunt, and other tracks from the ubiquitous Back To
Bedlam. But don't hold that against her.
On her own, Ghost makes the kind of ethereal-but-sexy folk that
goes well with a cheap Rioja, and a fumble on the sofa with your
beloved.
First track ‘Deep water’ is a pleasant enough strum-fest.
Its shifting time signatures and sultry vocal rescue it from drive-time
territory a la KT Tunstall. More impressive is the eerie Time
Machine (co-penned with Boy George) which boasts a burbling trip-hop
undercurrent, and a killer chorus. In 1995, this would have been
a top-ten hit (and should be now).
‘Blood On The Line’ is a stripped-down acoustic number
with more than a whiff of Stevie Nicks (one of Ghost’s mentors).
In this mode, Ghost seems more comfortable, but strangely less
convincing.
But all in all, there;’s enough here to suggest that her
forthcoming album, scheduled for Autumn, will definitely be worth
a listen.
