Plans
& Apologies
'Spiderz in the bar (part 2)'
Spiderz in
the bar (part 2) sees Derby twee-popsters lose some of their eccentricities,
offering a far more structured pop sound than on previous releases.
There is still no chance this will disappoint as opener, whilst
not being the bands strongest moment, still contains all the elements
that make P&A one of the most original and exciting bands
in the UK.
This is a classy slice of melodic pop sound that draws the listener
into a summery wonderland.
Their usual, wistful lyrical humour is apparent on all of the
three tracks. There are few bands around right now that have such
a playful control over wordplay and wry storytelling.
‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’ whilst being another
slice pop, takes in angular rock guitar parts and electronic backdrops
give it depth that most of P&A’s peers are lacking.
Final track ‘Sympathy for a Ghost’ (which originally
appeared on The National Student’s Fresher
Sounds volume 1 compilation) is a subtle slice of relaxining
downtempo rock.
Plans and Apologies are a band that a worth devoting time, and
money to. Each release offers a new take on their essentially
brilliant sound.
