The
Flying Scotsman tells the impressive true story of cycling champion
Graeme Obree in this feel good, slightly over sentimental drama by Douglas
Mackinnon.
Obree,
a life long sufferer of depression, played by Jonny Lee Miller, overcame
his personal demons and the UCI, Union Cycliste Internationale –
the governing body of the sport and fans of traditional cycling, by
designing a new bike and using a radical style of cycling to break world
records and win the world championships.
The
acting, in particular Brian Cox, a vicar who’s young wife committed
suicide, is excellent and there is a genuine excitement about the cycling
scenes.
The Flying Scotsman is an uplifting film and Obree’s achievements
were inspirational but it does suffer from being a touch over sentimental
and a bit long.
