A Film About
The Pixies

***

"Basically I was trying to rip off The Pixies” is the opening quote by Kurt Cobain regarding grunge classic “Smells Like teen Spirit”. It’s not just Nirvana who were influenced. Different tracks bring to mind a plethora of other bands in this fascinating fly on the wall documentary directed by Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin.

The film follows the band on their comeback tour, reformed in 2004 after an acrimonious split in the early nineties.

Since the split, and perhaps Kurt Cobain’s early departure from the world, the band’s legend has grown. Old fans remain loyal whilst a new, obsessive, fan base has steadily increased. Much to the band’s surprise, every concert sells out and fast!

Founder member Black Francis’, real name Charles, Frank Black as a solo artist, relationship with bassist Kim Deal, herself part of The Breeders formed with her twin sister Kelly, was largely to blame for the split in the first place. Now, years on, they have mellowed although it’s clear they’ll never be best friends.

If you are a Pixies fan you wont need to read this because you’ll probably already be camped outside a cinema box office. If you’ve never heard them before then check this film out, if only to list the many bands that pop into your head as each new tune is performed.
