Allan
and Wrigglesworth
Tom Allan and Tom Wrigglesworth
Gilded Balloon Teviot, August 2-28
***
Despite a shared name, a shared flat and a shared billing,
Allen and Wrigglesworth are not a double act but two very different
sides of the same production budget (though they make such an interesting
contrast it might be fun to see them have a bit more banter between
acts.)
Allen is a posh pedantic middle-aged man trapped in the body of a baby
faced boy. If he’s faintly reminiscent of the posh pedantic baby
from Family Guy, it’s a schtick he has utterly mastered.
Then Mr Wrigglesworth, extremely tall and rather more northern, is affable
enough, though his rant against the woman who wrote to complain about
his act was more petulant than a vindication of the right to free speech.
(To be fair, she probably wasn’t offended by his oral sex joke,
more provoked by the fact it wasn’t especially funny.)
Neither comedian has ground-breaking material, each veering close to
the wrong side of banal at points, but each has a warmth and moments
of laugh out loud delivery.
