Slam (54 Crew)

magazine caught up with one of the many respected artists who will be painting live at Aerosolics Anonymous... Slam from 54 Crew.

magazine: How did you first get involved in aerosol art?

Slam: I was in a rubbish breakdance crew called The Street Force (hahahahaha!), I couldn't break too well but I could draw and every crew had a graffiti artist so that's what happened... bubble writing to begin with, oops!

magazine: Do you paint illegally on public property?

Slam: Used to, I feel I've got too much to lose now, I know it's quite sad but most of my work is in graffiti workshops and commissioned stuff.

magazine: Would you like to see public painting legalised?aerosolics

Slam: You could never legalise tagging, dubs, panels, you'd lose the buzz! There's nothing wrong with a bit of subversion!

magazine:
Is 'graffiti' a dirty word to you?!

Slam: No, love the word!

magazine: The Feeling (playing Aerosolics stage) would be up for doing a set all sprayed up; do bodies appeal to you as surfaces to exhibit your style?!

Slam: What's wrong with people?! They'll really enjoy trying to wash it off, ow!

magazine: What can be done to change negative public opinion about aerosol art?

Slam: Graff is beginning to be a recognised art form and soon all the oldies with no idea what it's all about because they can't be bothered to research it will be gone. Please understand, not all of them are like that but a lot of that generation walk around with blinkers on. I'm mid thirties now, you know, getting on a bit, so it won't be long before the world changes.

magazine: Do you enjoy any other art forms?

Slam: Sculpture, graphic design, 3D illustration, making electronic tunes…

magazine: Would you like to see aerosol art alongside painting, sculpture etc?

Slam: Whatever, everything creative has a shared space.

magazine: Have you ever been arrested for painting?

Slam: Only once…it was worth it though!
