The
monotony of working nine-to-five, in the same office everyday, may appeal
to some people but if you’re not one of them, read on. If a job
packed with action, adventure and challenge is more your thing, then
a career with the RAF could be just the ticket. Right now the RAF is
looking for talented individuals who can train at officer level for
a wide range of roles, including Air Traffic Controllers, Fighter Controllers,
Doctors, Dentists, Engineers, Administrators and much more.
With top class training and solid career prospects, the RAF offers a
multitude of benefits to graduates planning their next steps. The pay
is competitive and the life of an RAF officer is nothing short of an
adventure. But don’t just take our word for it. Flying Officer
Emily Oxley-Green is based at RAF Leuchars in Scotland and loves her
job as an RAF Air Traffic Controller.
“I never wanted to work in a typical office environment and in
the RAF every day is different. I could be working with up to 16 aircraft
at one time in extreme conditions. I get a real buzz from the job.”
“The role involves a lot of communication and working as a solid
team is vital to ensure that every plane is safe. I get a real sense
of achievement at the end of a shift and I can’t think of any
other profession that would give me that.”
Your role as an officer will be to lead and manage other members of
your team. An expert in your chosen field, you will be called upon to
make important decisions and take responsibility for their welfare and
discipline.
But it’s not all work. You are actively encouraged to pursue sporting
and adventure activities and socialise with your colleagues. ‘Work
hard - play hard’ is very much the RAF ethos.
In her spare time Emily enjoys horse-riding and playing polo and is
quick to point out that this is all very much encouraged by her employer.
“I’ve been on a number of RAF polo training weekends and
hope one day to play on the RAF team. I think that life in the RAF can
offer more than just a career.”
As an officer in the RAF you can expect a minimum starting salary of
£21,900 rising according to the rank and responsibility you hold.
Individuals will also be given six weeks paid holiday per year.
Other benefits include subsidised rent and food for those who choose
to live on base, free access to sports facilities, an annual allowance
for training or education outside of your job and the opportunity to
travel.
