FA cup fairy tale ends in Chasetown defeat
TeamBath’s
hopes of securing a coveted place in the second round of the FA Cup
for the first time in their short history ended in a 2-0 defeat at home
to a plucky Chasetown.
Vaughan Thomas netted the first after 10 minutes and Craig Holland’s
powerful shot made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark giving TeamBath a mountain
to climb in front of a 2,067 strong crowd at Twerton Park.
Dean Smith forced Lee Evans into a fine save - he had to react sharply
to tip Smith’s looping header over the bar.
Then Sean Canham headed an effort at the Chasetown keeper from Josh
Llewellyn’s cross five minutes before Holland struck to make it
2-0.
Twelve minutes after the break Darren Chitty dived at full length to
keep out a Kyle Perrow shot.
And on the hour-mark Shaun Lamb had to race back to clear off his line
after Ben Steane’s shot had beaten Chitty on his near post.
Sub Steve Abbott had two efforts deep into added time, while the two
Matts - Lock and Townley - worked tirelessly down the right flank.
After the game TeamBath manager Ged Roddy said: “The lads are
devastated and they feel as though they’ve let themselves down
a bit, but we’re a young side and we’ve got to deal with
it as an experience.”
“We made the first round of the FA Cup and the lads can be proud
of that.”
“We did our best to try to get back into it in the second half,
but we left ourselves with a bit of a hill to climb.
“It’s only early November and we’ve still got a lot
to play for this season. We wish Chasetown the best of luck in the second
round. We were second best and they deserved to win. They’re physical
and fast, and whoever gets them in the next round will have to watch
out.”
