Aberdeen enjoy themselves in Sheffield
The
Saturday and Sunday of the BUSA Championships saw the finest boxers
England’s universities have to offer meet at Sheffield’s
English Institute of Sport.
As with the universities boxing championships which took place in December
there were men’s and women’s champions to be decided in
novice and open class. The novice class was open to boxers who had fought
in less than ten fights and the open class for those who had experienced
more than ten bouts.
The University of Aberdeen dominated the
women’s novice division, picking up two golds and a silver. Oxford’s
Becky Lee interrupted the Aberdeen sweep with a gold medal in the 54kg
division, defeating Dorothee Barberon of the London School of Economics
14-4.
An all Aberdeen final in the 60kg division saw Lorna Robertson defeat
Julie Kirpu 4-0 and their compatriot Kristen Fraser claimed the 66kg
title with a comfortable 17-2 win against University of Strathclyde’s
Gemma Brodie.
There were five medals up for grabs in the men’s novice class
and the first of these went to The University of Portsmouth.
James Connor produced a hardworking display to see off University of
Glasgow’s
James Munro 7-2 and become 57kg champion. Coventry University’s
Jason Cuddy added to the gold medal he picked up in December by winning
in the 64kg division, claiming an 11-5 victory against Robert McLoughlan
of Strathclyde.
Cuddy's
Coventry team-mate James Nugent just edged out London School of Economic’s
Christopher Baugh 6-4 in a tight 69kg final. In the other two men’s
novice finals, the University of Sussex’s Gareth Bowkett saw off
Leeds Met’s Liam Cutler by 9 points to 5 and Leeds University’s
Peter Baldwin produced an outstanding defence to win without conceding
a single point, claiming a 5-0 victory against Edinburgh’s James
King.
The two men’s open class division finals were opened with a superb
performance from UWIC’s Sean Kilroy as he outclassed Worcester’s
John Bray 12-1 in the 57kg division.
The 75kg division saw the gold medal taken back to Edinburgh after Michael
McGregor hammered Portsmouth’s Dan Hendy 15-6. Aberdeen enjoyed
the most success at the boxing in Sheffield, taking three gold medals
and a silver back to Scotland, but Coventry’s haul of two golds
and a silver was also a good showing.
